Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi)

Mission Statement

Whether in the legal system, in political or in everyday sociocultural contexts – actors in migration societies refer in their discursive practice to human rights to articulate images of themselves as well as their interests. The observation of this “humanrightization” of migration discourse is the starting point for the collaborative work within the GGS section “Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi)”. We take an interdisciplinary approach in examining the human rights practices in migration society through the lens of legal analysis, social-science research and cultural studies perspectives.

The section strives for qualified education and training (qualification), scientific exchange (networking) and an intensive research dialogue (research). To realize these three objectives, the section creates structures in which the members can introduce and exchange on various topics and methods that allow for an understanding of human rights discourses and practices in migration societies. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary knowledge transfer between the different section members to learn from and with each other. We aim to create a fruitful environment to support and encourage independent research activities by members of all qualification levels.

The section also acknowledges the importance of academia engaging with activism and practice. A relevant part of our activities was hence dedicated to the organisation of public events with the participation of activists and practitioners to introduce our findings in public discourse and critically assess and learn from non-academic perspectives.

The section reflects in essence the research associates (PhDs and Postdocs) of the DFG research group Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi). However, we welcome all those who are interested and situate their research in the context of human rights discourse in migration societies!
