Lecture by Janina Schlüsselburg: 'Border Imaginaries, Symbolic Borders, and Metaphors in Images of Migration'

Where? Online presentation as part of Prof Greta Olson's seminar ‘Imag[en]ing Migration’ / a recording can be found here

This presentation analyses how visual metaphors construct border imaginaries and shape migration discourse, using visual examples from Germany and Australia. Building on Olson and Wessel's work, I examine how images portray migrants - from anonymous masses to victims to empowered individuals - revealing how visual narratives construct and perpetuate specific understandings of human mobility. My findings demonstrate how shared visual patterns transcend national contexts to shape both public understanding and policy responses, highlighting the crucial role of media organisations in constructing the symbolic boundaries that define migration debates.

Janina Schlüsselburg is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales. Her research investigates media representations of migration across Australian, German, and U.S. American digital platforms and examines how migration imagery functions as affective artefacts. Through a critical lens, she explores how narrative patterns in Global North media perpetuate neo-colonial gatekeeping practices. Her research advocates for a shift beyond traditional portrayals, amplifying agency of individuals depicted in migration imagery. She is an affiliated member of the DFG research group Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi) and the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at Justus Liebig University Giessen.

To the doctor without fear. How residence status prevents access to healthcare.

Lecture and discussion with Sarah Lincoln (Society for Civil Liberties) and Janina Gach (Doctors of the World)

Access to medical care is a fundamental human and basic right. Healthcare is a basic condition for the fulfilment of a dignified life. Despite this fundamental value and the far-reaching guarantees and access in the German healthcare system, certain groups remain excluded, such as people ‘without papers’, i.e. people without a regular residence status. § Section 87 of the Residence Act obliges state authorities to report people without regular residence status to the immigration authorities, which then initiate deportation. This also includes the social welfare offices as cost bearers for the treatment of people without regular residence status. This obligation to report is not only criticised at national level. This lack of a ‘firewall’ has also been criticised by the UN Social Committee and the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women as a violation of non-discriminatory access to healthcare. The Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF) and Ärzte der Welt e.V., together with the GleichBeHandeln campaign, are campaigning for the abolition of Section 87 of the Residence Act. In our impulse, Sarah Lincoln and Janina Gach report on the joint efforts to abolish Section 87 and the lawsuit ‘Ohne Angst zum Arzt’ (Without fear to the doctor). They will report on the procedure so far, previous (mis)successes and the opportunities for people in the fields of medicine and law to become active themselves in order to stand up for health care that complies with human rights.

An event organised by the scientific staff of the MeDiMi research group / GGS-AG MeDiMi in cooperation with the GGS section Global Health & Human Rights, the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e.V. and Ärzte der Welt e.V.

The event is part of the GFF University Tour. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, the GFF will speak at various universities on fundamental rights issues and current cases. Link: https://freiheitsrechte.org/ontour
