Evening Courses During Summer Semester 2026

! Registration for the summer semester begins on April 1st 2026 !

In the summer semester of 2026, the German as a Foreign Language department of the International Office will once again offer a wide range of evening courses for international university members of JLU and THM.

: April 21, 2026
Course end: July 16, 2026 

Course changes are possible until the end of the first course week.

New from the summer semester 2026:

Introduction of tiered course fees: In order to be able to offer high-quality evening courses in the long term, course fees have been introduced for all groups of people for the first time. The model is designed in a socially responsible way.

Course registration in several phases: For the first time, registration will be conducted in phases so that designated groups receive priority access and all participants have adequate time to complete their enrollment.

Registration

This is how registration will work starting April 1: The registration period will last a total of 15 days (from April 1 to April 15) and will be divided into four phases according to target groups:

  • Phase 1: Registration for exchange students (April 1-6) Deadline extended to April 7 at 6:00 p.m.!
  • Phase 2: Registration for JLU students and freemovers (April 8-9)
  • Phase 3: Registration for doctoral students, employees, visiting scholars and THM students (April 10-12)
  • Phase 4: Registration for all groups, including family members (April 14-15)

Important information

  • You may only register for one evening course. Duplicate registrations cannot be accepted.
  • Your group will be automatically recognized in the system – please have your JLU/THM ID ready or your JLU email address.
  • To pay the course fees, you will need a bank account from the European Economic Area (EEA) so that you can provide us with a SEPA direct debit authorization. Please have your IBAN ready.
  • Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
  • Course registration is only possible during the respective booking period for your target group. Unfortunately, registrations outside this period cannot be accepted by the system.
  • Course registration will open at 8:00 a.m. during each phase and remain open until 6:00 p.m. on the respective deadline.

General Course Information

  • We offer our evening courses from beginner level (A1) to advanced level (C1).
    Entry is possible at any level.

  • The courses take place on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 PM to 7:45 PM.

  • The courses comprise 52 teaching units (TU) in the winter semester and 48 TU in the summer semester, equivalent to 3 ECTS.

  • Class size: max. 25 participants.

  1. Book the course: Log in as usual via the booking system.
  2. Provide SEPA direct debit mandate: Confirm preliminary mandate during the booking process.
  3. Send an email to daf-aaa@admin.uni-giessen.de: Please indicate in the subject line: !YOUR NAME, doctoral candidate, institute covers the invoice! and send us the contact details of the institute/payer:
    1. Name of the institution
    2. Billing address
    3. Contact person (name, email, phone)
    4. Any different email for invoices
  4. Invoicing: We will invoice your institute.
  5. After payment: Once the institute has paid, we will delete your SEPA direct debit mandate. There are no additional costs.

 

How do I register?

1. Before Registration

  • A1.1 | No proof required. Please have an empty PDF file ready. You will need to upload it to the booking system during the onboarding process.
  • All other levels | Prepare proof
    • Option 1 - Language certificate: Please upload your language certificate from the most recent German course during registration (certificate of achievement/ Leistungsschein)
    • Option 2 - Placement test: If you don´t have a language certificate, please take a placement test. Save the result as a PDF file (max. duration: 90 minutes): https://einstufungstests.klett-sprachen.de/eks/DaF-A1-C1/

2. Registration in the New Booking System

  • Register in the digital booking system of uninow using a JLU or THM account
    • Have your language proof ready (language certificate or placement test in PDF format).
    • Fill in all onboarding fields.
    • Note: Do not click "back" during the registration process.

  • Book a course
    • Log in with your JLU/THM account or your JLU/THM email address
    • Select your German course
    • Click the “Add to Cart” button.
    • Follow the step-by-step instructions during the booking process.
    • To pay the course fees, fill out the corresponding SEPA mandate and click “Book with payment obligation.” 
    • A European bank account is required for the course fees to be debited. Cash payments are not accepted.
    • You will then receive a provisional booking confirmation.
  • Provisional booking confirmation: 
    • Enrollment in the selected course requires approval from the DaF Course Office. You will receive a final booking confirmation only after this approval has been granted. This may take a few days. Please be patient. If you are not able to secure a spot in the course, we will notify you. 
  • Binding booking confirmation:
    • Once your registration has been successfully verified, you will receive a binding confirmation of registration at the email address you provided.
    • The confirmation email will contain all the important details about the course you have registered for, including the date, time, and location.

 

  • Cancellation and course changes:
    • Course changes are possible until the end of the first course week. Please send us an e-Mail to daf-aaawith your request to change courses and the reason for the change.
    • Cancellations are possible up to 10 days before the course starts. A 20% administrative fee will be retained when refunding course fees. For cancellations after this period, the full course fee will be charged.

  • Feedback
    • Your opinion matters: After completing the course, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback. Your opinion helps us continuously improve our services.

The evening courses are explicitly not intended for VIP students.

Do I need to take a placement test?

You are not required to take the placement test...

  • if you are starting with a beginner's course (A1.1).
  • if you have already taken and passed an evening course with us. Please remember to upload the certificate of achievement in the booking system.
  • if you upload one of the following language certificates to the booking system: Goethe Certificate, Sprachdiplom der KMK, TestDaF, ÖSD, and telc Certificate.

If this does not apply to you, you must take the placement test. We recommend the test from Klett-Verlag. Please save the result as a PDF and adhere to the 90-minute time limit. You can find the test here: https://einstufungstests.klett-sprachen.de/eks/DaF-A1-C1/

How do I register for a course?

Please use our online booking system. See here: https://aaa-giessen.uninow.com/de. Follow the instructions and complete the booking. Further details are available in our guide

Will I receive a certificate?

Upon successful completion (passing all exams with at least 50%) and 80% attendance, a certificate of achievement will
be issued. Otherwise, you will receive a certificate of participation. No ECTS credits are awarded for the participation certificate, and it does not entitle the holder to participate in the follow-up course.

Are the German courses free of charge?

Both evening courses and intensive courses are subject to fees for all eligible participants. See our fee
