This research investigates forms and functions of performativity, and dimensions of ecology and decoloniality in Ana Mendieta’s “earth-body” art. Focusing on a selected group of films and photographs made between 1972 and 1982 in Iowa, Oaxaca, and Havana, it analyzes how performance emerges as a mode of mediating relations between the earth and the body from an ecological and decolonial perspective. The goal is to understand Mendieta’s work not as documentation of ephemeral acts, but as performative acts “from the earth” and “with the earth”, while contributing to the decolonization of art history and to ecological readings of artistic practice.
