Description
The Electron Microscopy Core Facility of the Medical Faculty of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen is located within the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology. The core facility is available to all interested research groups of the JLU and external institutions as a common research infrastructure. We offer competent support and advice in all steps of project planning, execution and evaluation. It is directed by PD Dr. Ulrich Gärtner.
Instrumentation/Software
- Transmission electron microscope Zeiss EM 900EL
- Transmission electron microscope Zeiss LEO 906
- Scanning electron microscope (SEM) Philips/FEI XL30
- Polaron E5000 Sputter Coater
- Critical Point Dryer Balzers (Leica) CPD 030
- Ultracut E, Ultracut S
Services
Our Core Facility offers an all-round service in the field of transmission and scanning electron microscopy from sample preparation to imaging. We provide advice on planning, conducting, and evaluating research projects. The Core Facility performs work as a complete service to users. In addition, authorized users can use the microscopes/devices independently after participating in a device briefing.
Core services in detail:
- Conventional TEM sample preparation, including embedding in various types of resin and ultrathin sectioning
- Conventional SEM sample preparation, including chemical dehydration, critical point drying and sputter coating
- Negative staining of purified macromolecular complexes, bacteria, viruses, liposomes, nanoparticles, or viral like particles (VLP)
- Immunoelectron microscopy using pre-embedding, post-embedding
- Transmission electron microscopic imaging (digital image acquisition)
- Scanning electron microscopic imaging
