Topping-out ceremony for Fraunhofer Research Building for Bioresources in Gießen

The structural work is completed - the planned Fraunhofer Institute for Bioresources in Gießen is taking shape. The topping-out ceremony for the new research building of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was celebrated in the presence of the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier. Half of the approximately 30 million-euro construction on the Leihgesterner Weg / corner of Ohlebergsweg is funded by the state of Hessen and the federal government. It should be ready in the middle of the year 2019.

With the new building, a new center for the development of bioresources for the bioeconomy is being created in Gießen. Bioresources, which are looking for new biomolecules for medicine, plant protection and industry, but also for alternative protein sources, include not only insects but also bacteria and fungi as well as animal poisons. The basis for the planned Fraunhofer Institute - it would be the first in the Central Hesse region - is the LOEWE Center for Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources, which is part of the cooperation between the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), the Technical University of Central Hesse (THM ) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME has developed very successfully. The state of Hesse has been funding the LOEWE Center for Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources, which emerged from a LOEWE focus on insect biotechnology, since 2014.
