Food System’s Transformation: International Efforts and Chinese Practice
This lecture examines how global agrifood systems are being reshaped under the pressures of climate change, environmental degradation, geopolitical uncertainty, and rising malnutrition and inequality. It reviews major international efforts, including the UN Food Systems Summit process and discusses persistent challenges in implementation, financing, and equity. The talk focuses on China’s experience in transforming its agrifood system through high-level visiontechnological innovation, policy reform, food loss reduction, dietary transition, and rural development. Emphasis is placed on balancing food security, environmental sustainability, and nutrition goals through integrated, system-based approaches. The lecture concludes by outlining future directions such as AI-enabled agriculture, circular food systems, and strengthened international cooperation for more resilient and sustainable global food systems.

Professor Shenggen Fan is a Chair Professor at China Agricultural University and Dean of the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP). From 2009 to 2019, he served as Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
Professor Fan has led extensive and influential research in public investment, global food and nutrition security, agricultural and rural development, poverty reduction, and agri-food system transformation. His work has had significant policy impact, including providing strong empirical evidence supporting increased rural road investment in India. He has also advised governments in China, Vietnam, and several African countries on food and agricultural policy.
He serves on multiple boards and advisory bodies, including as a member of the Integrated Partnership Board of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and as a board member of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), the Global Development Network (GDN), and the University of Central Asia. He is also a member of the advisory committees of the World Food Prize and the Oxford Martin School.
Professor Fan is a Fellow of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). In 2006, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota and the university-wide Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals. He is also a recipient of the Hunger Hero Award presented by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2014) and the Fudan Management Excellence Award (2017).
