Getting started
On this page we provide information on the application process, preconditions, deadlines and start of studies for our master's degree programmes with an emphasis on international applicants.
In general, students can apply for a Master's programme of our faculty if they hold a Bachelor's degree with a three-year duration of the study program (at least 180 Credits).
The English Master's programmes only start in the winter semester (October).
Application deadlines
The general application deadline of the JLU Gießen is June 15 for the winter semester and January 15 for the summer semester .
The application deadline of our international Master's Degree programmes Agrobiotechnology, Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources as well as Transition Management is June 15th.
The application deadline of our international Master's Degree programme Sustainable Transition is July 15th .

The application period for international degree programmes via uni-assist starts May 1 on www.uni-assist.de.

This applies to applicants with a Bachelor's degree from a German university.

Application via uni-assist
Applicants who obtained their university entrance certificate abroad and completed a Bachelor's programme at a foreign university need to apply via www.uni-assist.de.
To submit your application please register at uni-assist.de and fill in the online application forms on www.uni-assist.de.

Uni-assist checks all applications for completeness and correctness and whether the documents fullfil the requirements of the study course selected. If all requirements are met, applications are passed on to JLU Giessen.
Please note that only the application for the study programmes Sustainable Transition and Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources require a letter of motivation and a minimum Bachelor's grade of 2.6 (based on the German grading system).
Because of the duration of the application procedure, your application documents and the requisite processing fees must arrive at uni-assist no later than 14 days before the application deadline. Official date of receipt for your application is the day on which your application documents are determined to be complete.
Applicants submitting their application via uni-assist should note the following:
- Make sure you first register on the online portal of uni-assist. Here you can submit an application or, if necessary, more than one.
- Please transfer the official processing fees to uni-assist in good time, as inspection of your documents can only be undertaken after the fees have been paid.
Your documents as certified hard copies and the fees must be received by uni-assist no later than 14 days before the application deadline .
Formal Preconditions
Studying a Master degree programme at the faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Home Economics and Environmental Management requires a Bachelor degree with a three-year duration of the study program (180 Credits) or a comparable degree.
Relevant Bachelor Degreee Programmes
Precondition for admission to the Master degree programmes is a Bachelor degree in a relevant Bachelor programme. The relevant Bachelor programmes are listed in appendix 3 to the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung).

Language Requirements
In order to apply for a degree programme in English, a very good command of English has to be proven. The following certificates are accepted:
- A score of at least 95 points in TOEFL-Test IBT (internet-based test) or score 7 in IELTS academic-test;
- Local University entrance certificates in one of the following countries: Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, South Africa;
- A degree in a Bachelor programme in English in one of the following countries: Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, South Africa;
- UNIcert III"-Certificate.
If you would like to apply for a programme conducted in German, you need to provide evidence of German skills.
Visa
You will require a valid student visa in order to be allowed to enter Germany to study. Nationals of the EU, the USA, and certain other countries are exempt from this regulation. Student visas are issued by the German consulate in your home country.
The following documentation will need to be supplied:
- Valid passport
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds available to finance your study in Germany
- Records of previous study and language skills
- Letter of admission to the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen
- Proof that sufficient funds are available to finance your study in Germany
- If applying for a prospective student visa: a recognised higher education entrance qualification
- Possibly a health certificat

Sometimes it can take months for a visa to be issued, therefore it is important to apply for a visa early, even if you have not yet been accepted into a higher education institution. You can also apply for a prospective student visa and then later convert it to a residence permit for studying once you have arrived in Germany.

You are admitted to an academic course of study and have been allocated a place at Justus Liebig University (JLU)!
Your official confirmation of admission to JLU can be found online on the official application website of the JLU Giessen. You will receive a link to access this page. The confirmation can be downloaded in English or in German. If you need a confirmation email, please contact the office for international admission (international.admission@admin.uni-giessen.de).
With the confirmation of admission you can make an appointment at the German embassy for your student visa and it also enables you to apply for accomodation in one of the student dormitories .
The enrolment process takes place at the International Office within the stipulated enrolment period. The international office sends an email to all applicants with the information for opening a personal university account. There the status of the application is given and all further steps are indicated.

Permanent student ID card
You will receive your permanent student ID card within 3-4 days along with a letter containing your PIN codes. You can pick up your ID card at the Studierendensekretariat (Student office). As part of the Master Introduction Day you will be heading there with your tutor and have the opportunity to obtain your ID card. Please remember that the PIN letter is an important document, as it contains all of the passwords that you require to register for classes and exams. In case of loss, please contact the Hochschulrechenzentrum (university information services).

Giessen University does not charge study fees as such; it does, however, charge administrative fees. These fees currently amount to about 275 Euro per semester (approximately 290 Euro for the initial enrolment).

These fees cover:
- Semester ticket for local public transport services (further information on the semester ticket)
- Semester fee for the students' association
- Semester fee for student services
- Administrative fees
- Bond (one-time payment) for the chip-card ID at initial enrolment
- Theatre ticket and public pool flatrate
Sustainable Transition : For the entirely digital degree programme Justus Liebig University charges a semester contribution of approx. 100 EUR. This is an administrative fee and does not include the local discounts.
The administrative fees must be paid prior to enrolling at Giessen University. We recommend that you transfer the administrative fees payment from within your home country. Please ensure that the transaction process is documented, as you will require said documentation when enrolling at the university.
Re-matriculation
Each semester, every student is required to pay the administrative fees within a specific time period – a procedure known as re-matriculation. Failure to pay the fees within the stipulated period will result in automatic exmatriculation.

After you have paid the fee, you will have to go to the Registrar's office to update your Student ID Card and to collect documentation for the course of your studies which you need to store safely.
