Innovation Laboratory

Was ist ein Innovationslabor

The State of Hessen provides grants from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the funding period 2014-2020 in order to support projects which aim to strengthen research and technical development and to improve transfer of innovative knowledge from universities, research institutes and transfer facilities to industry.

The main goals are, amongst other, preparation, establishment and operation of competence and application centers at universities. Such innovation-relevant institutions also include interdisciplinary innovation laboratories like the ERDF - Innovation Laboratories “Rough-ambient physics” and High-performance materials” established at the Justus Liebig University (JLU) in Giessen. The ERDF - Innovation Laboratory “Rough-ambient physics bundles core competencies of JLU in space physics, plasma research, materials science and instrumentation for subatomic physics. It will initially focus on space and satellite applications. The main focus is on the development of innovative research infrastructure on three primary subjects areas which are radiation hardness, electromagnetic compatibility and smart material and intelligent system design. On the other hand, the ERDF - Innovation Laboratory “High-performance materials” specifically expands the core competencies of JLU in the field of materials science. This Innovation Laboratory is meant to be developed into a research platform that offers companies based in Hessen long-term opportunities for cooperation in the development and characterization of high-performance materials. For this application, six international companies have already agreed to actively participate in the ERDF project and are involved in six pilot projects.
