Courses

Information on how your courses are designed can be obtained from the lecturers, in Stud.IP or on the websites of your department. As things stand at present, it is planned to gradually introduce face-to-face teaching from 2 June 2020. However, we can only "drive on sight", which means that all participants must react with maximum flexibility in view of the respective pandemic situation. Events that absolutely require personal presence (e.g. laboratory internships or practical sports events) can also be offered again from 2 June 2020, provided that the situation is assessed accordingly.

Exams
Examination planning for the postponed examinations from the previous winter semester and also for the examinations now due is currently underway. Students who are affected will be informed as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on the websites of your examination offices and deaneries.

Living Expenses

In Germany, you must reckon with costs of at least 853 € per month. The financing of your studies must be clarified before you begin your studies (privately, through scholarships, etc.) Students from non-EU countries need an official proof of financing (e.g. blocked account in Germany or scholarship certificate from a public scholarship provider). Should problems arise during your studies, we will be happy to advise you in a personal conversation.

Work Permit

International students who are in possession of a valid residence permit are allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Up to four hours a day are considered half a day, everything else is considered a full day. An entry in the passport of the immigration authorities is sufficient as a work permit. Student activities (hiwi jobs) are also and in addition to the 120 days allowed on the basis of this entry.

For employment exceeding 120 full days or 240 half days per year, the respective immigration authority must issue a special permit in consultation with the respective employment office. In this case, both authorities act at their discretion; there is no fundamental entitlement to the issue of a work permit.

Living

Please arrange accommodation in Giessen as early as possible. This link gives you valuable tips. If you have already found an apartment, have your landlord sign the landlord's certificate (confirmation of the landlord about moving in). You will need this for registration at the city office.

Registration with the Authorities

Everywhere in Germany you have to register with the authorities within 14 days if you change your place of residence. This means that after your arrival you must move into an apartment and sign a tenancy agreement. You must bring your identity card or passport and a confirmation from your landlord.

Immigration Office

All international students from non-EU countries need a valid residence permit for Germany. Before you apply for a residence permit, you must register at the city office of Giessen. The application or the extension of the residence permit should be applied for at least one month before its expiry. If you have any questions regarding the residence permit, we will be happy to advise you.

JLU Account: "S-Account"

You need your university account to get internet access and your e-mail address as well as to use all digital services (Stud.IP, library, etc.) of the university. You can find more information here. You will be informed by post about how to get your university account and how to create a password for yourself when you have successfully completed your registration. Only then can you register for courses and seminars via the online platform Stud.IP.

JLU ID Card and Semester Ticket

Please note that the temporary ID that you will receive when you register is also valid as a semester ticket in combination with a photo ID (e.g. identity card or passport).

Study Introduction Week (StEW)/Study Introduction Days (StET)

The course of study begins with the study introductory week. This is where you create your timetable, learn how the course is structured, how to find your way around the university (institutes, library, refectory) and register for seminars or exams. Please be sure to note the information specific to your course of study (including contact details and the possibility of joining mentor groups) as well as information on the organisation of your studies.
