Workshop: Managing Information with Digital Tools

Writing a PhD requires manage large quantities of information: references, resources, ideas, drafts, and notes. Nowadays, a lot of digital tools are available to help one keep this information organized. This workshop proposes a look at different options that are available in terms of reference management software (such Zotero, Citavi, EndNote, Mendeley) and note-taking software (such as Microsoft OneNote, Evernote, Google Keep).

The aim of this workshop is to encourage participants to discover tools that can help them manage the data they gather for their project, in order to keep an overview on the information they are working with, save time in the later stages of their research and avoid data loss.

The first part of the workshop will be dedicated to reference management software. A short presentation will introduce the respective pros and cons of different software. Thereafter, participants will have the opportunity to try out the basic features themselves using Zotero, a free and open-source reference management software that is available for all operating systems. They will learn how to create bibliographic references by hand, to import bibliographic references directly from commonly used academic databases, and to generate in-text citations, footnotes and bibliographies in word processors.
The second part of the workshop will be dedicated to note-taking software. After a round of discussion about the participants’ note-taking habits, a short presentation will introduce several different note-taking software, as well as best-practice tips for data storage (hard drives, backups, cloud services). The participants will then be invited to explore the basic features of either one or more of these programs.
