Overview

Contents

The Environmental Management BSc programme trains students to understand, analyse and evaluate current environmental problems using methods from the fields of science, economics, social sciences and law. To meet the challenges of the future, environmental interests need integrated planning, organisation and management. The growing need of a globalised world for environmental goods - food, drinking water, service water, energy and raw materials, biodiversity - calls for sustainability-focused ideas which are compatible with environmentally friendly processes and cycles.

This programme of studies concentrates particularly on the issues of landscape analysis and resource management. Given this focus, agriculture plays a prominent role, since it constitutes the most major use of land with many and varied effects on the environment.

This degree programme gives students a solid grounding in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, microbiology, ecology, soil science, hydrology, environmental chemistry, waste management and agriculture. From the third semester onwards, students have available to them modules in economics and planning as well as the opportunity to specialise.

Subject-specific prerequisites

This interdisciplinary programme of studies requires students to be flexible and interested particularly in scientific, sociological, economic and technical issues, methods and approaches.

Specialisation modules

The following specialisation modules might be chosen, for example:

  • Landscape Ecology;
  • Resource and Waste Management;
  • Microbiology and Hydrology;
  • Environmental Analysis and Geoinformatics;
  • Agriculture, Environment and Nature Conservation,;
  • Economy and Communication.

Practical application

Students may undertake a 20-week work placement (18 credit points) during their studies, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the realities of the professional sphere and help them find an area in which to specialise. The Placements Office maintains a database of suitable companies and institutions.
