Speaker/Contributors:

Rob Thompson has worked both in industry and with research scientists. He has over 15 years of experience helping groups to improve their interpersonal relationships and advance their careers. His multidisciplinary experience means he is well placed to bring the most appropriate practices to the scientific arena. Website: www.leadingscienceandindustry.de

Objectives:

  • How to persuade effectively.
  • Dealing with conflicting motivations and resolving conflict.
  • Dealing effectively with difficult people and “egos”.
  • Advanced negotiation techniques.
  • Ensuring clear communication and dealing with differing gender or cultural communication styles.

Content:

Interpersonal situations are too varied to be able to give you a script of things to say or do. This workshop will be about developing understanding of how people communicate and are persuaded (or not).

Attendees will be encouraged to recount their personal experiences and anecdotes as part of the discussion. This ensures the authenticity and relevance of the discussion examples and also allows participants to get advice and insight on any of their own particular issues that they wish to address.

The workshop structure will be flexible to allow the discussion of topics as they arise. This allows the participants to choose topics that are the most relevant and interesting to them.

Methods:

The workshop will not be a lecture. Instead, it will take the form of an open discussion forum to help facilitate ideas and develop strategies to improve the ways scientists communicate and work with each other. The overriding aim of this workshop is to stimulate thought about how people interact, what motivates them and how to best communicate to ensure co-operation, productivity and reduce conflict as much as possible.
