Composition of the study programme

The Bachelor's programme is made up of

• a major subject in Romance studies (80 CP)
• a minor subject in Romance studies (40 CP), as well as
• a secondary minor subject (40 CP)
• an internship/project or professional and interdisciplinary skills (AfK) (10 CP)
• a thesis module (10 CP)

The programme provides qualifications for a wide range of professional fields in business, publishing, public sector employers, the media, etc.

Romance studies major (80 CP)

Minor subject in Romance Studies(40 CP)

The following Romance Studies minors are offered:

• French studies / French
• Hispanic studies / Spanish
• Portuguese studies / Portuguese

 (The Romance Studies minor cannot be identical with the Romance studies major).

Secondary minor subject (40 CP) 

The following secondary minor subjects are offered:

• Anglophone studies
• Hispanic studies / Spanish
• French studies / French
• Portuguese studies / Portuguese
• Sociology
• Political Science
• Philosophy
• History
• Art history

(The secondary minor subject cannot be identical with the Romance Studies minor or the Romance Studies major.

Content

In addition to the thematic focus on literature, culture and language, the programme is expanded by the subject of Intercultural Communication.

This subject is characterised by the following two main features:

1. It is offered in a 'Romance' style, meaning that lecturers from different language and subject areas contribute to the organisation of the planned courses jointly and interdisciplinarily.
2. The theory of Intercultural knowledge is reflected and at the same time put into practice in everyday university life by students with different language specialisations working together on content and building up skills.

Structures

The specialist modules are offered for one semester. This means that two courses are offered in parallel for one module. These complement and deepen each other thematically, thus enabling students to deal with new content and competences from a broad perspective. 
In order to encourage the continuous expansion of foreign language skills, the language practice modules will continue to be offered for two semesters, i.e. each semester. This enables a staged development of competence.
The degree programme in Romance Studies can be started at the language level A2. You will be supported in improving your language skills through special accompanying activities, such as language-learning advice or other offers from the Self-Learning Workshop for Romance Studies.

Languages

French, Spanish or Portuguese can be chosen as a Romance major or minor subject. As a secondary minor subject, you have the choice between other linguistic and interdisciplinary subjects. It is possible to complete practical language modules with a UNIcert® examination. This is a standardised, internationally recognised language certificate, which provides proof of foreign language skills acquired during studies and at work.

Practical courses

The study programme includes an internship that can be completed in Germany or abroad. This option promotes the acquisition of professional skills and prepares students for their later entry into the profession (publishing houses, diplomatic service, advertising, media such as television and film) in the best possible way. In addition, the internship serves to develop a personal profile.

Prospects

At the same time, the Master's programme "Romance Studies" will start in winter semester 2020/21.
