Alumni meeting at UHOH in Stuttgart
Back to Stuttgart? In July, the 50-year celebration of the Institute of Food Chemistry at the University of Hohenheim (UHOH) gathered together most alumni. For 8 years, I taught Food Chemistry courses at UHOH (2003-2011). It was a pleasure to meet again.
Now, two alumni in the image are full professors at JLU Giessen (Chair of Food Chemistry and Chair of Food Science)! Additionally, Professor emeritus Dr. Wolfgang Schwack, Head and Director of the Food Chemistry Institute at UHOH for 22 years, has joined the group of Food Science at JLU Giessen since October 2017. WELCOME!

HPTLC 2017
At HPTLC 2017 in Berlin, about 210 participants from ca. 30 nations discussed the latest progress in HPTLC.
Poster presentation of the vanilla team: Erasmus students Sandrine Tomeba, Alice Sighicelli, and Martina Busso from Italy! They made it perfectly!
Congratulations to the speakers of our group - they did it excellently! It was great to see these outstanding young researchers. Among them, Dimitri Fichou (middle) was honored with the Young Researcher Award for his presentation on Office Chromatography!
Thanks to the Award Committee! Prizes for posters P-3 and P-18 encourage us to go on, as both developments were reached without the least funding!
First Poster Prize
At the jubilee XXXXth Symposium for ‘Chromatographic methods of investigating the organic compounds’ in Szczyrk, Poland, 23.-26.05.2017, our poster "Office Chromatography - do it yourself!" was awarded the First Poster Prize! We are grateful for this early recognition given to this instrumental open-source project termed Office Chromatography.
Award for research in direct bioautography
At the 72. Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Lebensmittel-, Veterinär- und Agrarwesen (ALVA) Meeting in Waldkirchen, Austria, 22.05.2017, Dr. Ines Klingelhöfer got the ALVA-Forschungspreis 2017 awarded for her cumulative dissertation based on our papers. We thank the Award Selection Committee for this honor!

Chinese delegation
For the second time, a delegation of the Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Testing and Analysis of Guizhou visited our lab to get insight into bioprofiling and food analysis. They also got information on the German and European food safety system.
Open-source-based 3D printing of thin silica gel layers
Another asset to be integrated into the Office Chromatography concept: A self-mounted, open-source Prusa i3 printer was modified with a self-designed slurry doser for 3D printing of layers. The proof-of-principle was successfully demonstrated for 3D printing of thin silica gel layers. All modifications of the device and software were released open-source to encourage re-use and improvements, and to stimulate the users to contribute to this technology. Interested?
