The better the analytical tool, the more you understand

Learn how hyphenated HPTLC can make a difference, and join our next hybrid course on effect-directed analysis taking place in March 2023. One can do it the way around or straigthforward - your decision. Who pays for inefficiency?
The straightforward non-targeted effect-directed screening improves the knowledge on important bioactive components in complex samples, including unknown unknowns, contaminants and non-intentially added substances. Not every detected unknown compound can be elucidated in its structure, but a decision on first priority compounds can thus be made. A fast and generic 8D or 12D hyphenation strategy clearly shows the gain in information. For example, it visualized that plant-based food contains powerful effective compounds which contribute to our homeostasis.
The plant extracts shown below were examined with the latest planar multiplex assay for detection of estrogen- or androgen-like substances: Agonists are detectable as a (methylumbelliferone) blue fluorescence zone, whereas antagonists show fluorescence signal reduction on the first agonist strip (fluoresces only after the assay) and false-positive antagonists also on the second end product strip. Synergists enhance the blue fluorescence on the agonist strip.
The chemical industry including analytical techniques has no choice but to become more sustainable. HPTLC is proven to be environmentally friendly (greenness assessment by analytical Eco-Scale)!

 

The first reports on planar adherent cell assays

We were the first that showed that human reporter cell grow on the separation adsorbent. The two first publications on it:

Csaba Horváth Memorial Award 2021

2021 digitally, now in person at ISC 2022 in Budapest: Csaba Horváth was Professor of Chemical Engineering at Yale. “Csaba was an inspirational researcher whose discoveries and high degree of professional excellence brought credit to Yale University for several decades. His loyalty and dedication to his students was only matched by theirs to him. He was a colleague valued by his department and the rest of the Faculty of Engineering, but also by the entire Yale Community,” said Dean of Yale Engineering, Paul Fleury. The medal is awarded in his honor. The lecture on Monday morning "Disruptive Planar Innovations: Multiplex Planar Assays, Non-Target 12 D Hyphenations, and 2LabsToGo Systems" and the papers on the 2LabsToGo system and Hyphenated technology were devoted to him:

 

We (I would like to integrate all scientists working with me over the dacades) are especially thankful that the award was given for the first time to:

  • the field of planar chromatographic innovations
  • a female researcher (after 15 males)

The Hungarian and Conneticut Separation Science Societies grant this award.

The amazing ceremony was led by Attila Felinger and Kristián Horváth. The great hospitality of the Hungarian Comittees is unsurpassed. Congratulations on the congress!



Since I always travel with carry-on luggage, we toasted on Monday after the last session.

Hanna Nikolaichuk from Ukraine/Poland joined us for 6 months to learn more about the hyphenated HPTLC technique by studying Rhodiola rosea, Akebia quinata and Clitoria ternatea.

Guests on earth

We honor Prof. Dr. Anton Dieter Hammel who passed away on March 12, 2022, aged 85. He was a recognized expert in the international bread and baked goods industry. First in the Central German Simonsbrot factory, and since 1994 as co-owner and managing director of Lieken-Batscheider Mühlen- und Backbetriebe, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1990, is the owner of numerous patents and became honorary professor at the JLU Giessen. On October 26, 1988, Professor Dr. Anton Dieter Hammel held his first lecture, initially in the graduate course in cereal technology. Since the modularization of the degree programs, he read the module MP-005 Food Technology, most recently jointly with me for 8 years. He has been warmly associated with food science ever since. His sensory exercises were particularly popular with the students. He also gladly told of his professional practice, where especially his work at the DLG testing and the development of the astronaut bread with patenting should be highlighted. After his 30th anniversary as a lecturer in December 2018, he retired from academial lecturing. He was an amazing personality with pointed remarks & allusions, all spiced with humor. He will remain in our hearts forever.

Er ist der Erfinder der Chromatographie. 1903 präsentierte er der damaligen Fachwelt seine Befunde zu Adsorptionserscheinungen: Blattfarbstoffe mit Petroether an Calciumcarbonatsäule! "Ihm war es gegeben, die Chromatographie zu entdecken, die die Moleküle trennt und die Menschen verbindet!" so steht es auf seinem Grabstein.
