Language Acquisition

Language as a core module

Language Acquisition is a mandatory part of the Bachelor's degree programmes B.Sc. Environmental Sciences and B.Sc. Global Food Systems:

Module Credits Semester
Language Acquisition I 6 CP 1st sememster
Language Acquisition II 6 CP 2nd semester

Which language courses you take depends on your German language proficiency.

If your German is below C1 CEFR

If your German is below C1 CEFR, you take German language courses as part of these modules.

Before you can be assigned to a German course, you must complete a German placement test. This also applies if you have no previous knowledge of German.

Based on your placement result and course availability, you will be assigned to a suitable German course. Where possible, you will take a course offered specifically for students of Faculty 09. If Faculty 09 does not offer a suitable course for your level, you will be referred to German language courses offered by JLU’s International Office.

If your German C1 CEFR or higher

If you can provide proof of German language proficiency at C1 CEFR or higher, you do not have to take German as part of the Language Acquisition modules. Instead, you take one or more other languages that are not your native language, totalling 6 CP per Language Acquisition module.

Please send proof of your German language proficiency at C1 level or higher – for example, a German Abitur certificate or another suitable language certificate – to daf-fb09.

Choosing another language

JLU’s Centre for Foreign Language and Professional Skills (ZfbK) offers language courses at different proficiency levels. You can find the current course programme, registration periods and exact booking times on the ZfbK website:

>> Current Language Courses and Registration at ZfbK

If you want to start a language without previous knowledge, you can register for a beginner course at the lowest level without taking a placement test.

Please note: Places in language courses are limited, and no places are reserved or guaranteed for students of Faculty 09. Beginner courses in particular can fill up very quickly. If you would like to take one of these courses, please check the exact date and time when registration opens and register immediately when booking becomes available. Even a delayed registration may mean that no place is available.

For advanced courses in English, French, Italian or Spanish, you must first take a placement test. Your test result determines the course level for which you can register.

Some languages are also offered as intensive courses during the lecture-free period.

Important: When selecting courses, make sure that the courses you complete add up to 6 CP per Language Acquisition module.

Language Certificates

Completing the Language Acquisition modules does not automatically result in an official language certificate.

If you would like to obtain an officially recognised certificate for your language skills, JLU offers UNIcert® certificates for selected languages and proficiency levels through the ZfbK.

UNIcert® levels are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At JLU, UNIcert® certificates are currently available for:

  • English: UNIcert® II and III
  • French: UNIcert® I and II
  • Spanish: UNIcert® Basis, I and II

To obtain a UNIcert® certificate, you must meet the specific course and examination requirements of the ZfbK. Participation in a Language Acquisition module alone does not constitute a UNIcert® qualification.
