Statehood and International Transformations

Mission Statement

In the course of the 21st century, the emergence of new dynamics has changed our understanding of statehood. Interactions between state entities created a demand for complex processes and institutions. The purpose of the Section is to identify causes of international, transnational and inner state transformations in order to approach current processes of change, their risks and opportunities in State formations, while taking into account external influences.

Our focus centers around the dynamics that grant access to and legitimize power systems in democracies and autocracies. When analyzing such diverse "transformations" of power systems, international influences, e.g. actors and organizations, should be taken into account due to the highly dynamic structure of international competition and cooperation patterns that unfold diverse effects on state power systems in different regions. The Section is open to political and social science focuses, as well as to legal and economic issues. Under the conceptual umbrella of "Transformation" research, transition processes can lead to democratic or autocratic regime development. Such processes are currently noticeable worldwide and can be observed in many ways and up to different degrees. These exemplary perspectives depict possible specializations: Institutions, International Institutions, comparative political science and civil society.

The section Statehood and International Transformation seeks to cooperate with the section Norms and Changes in Global Politics.

“It is about the dilemmas and possibilities that the social welfare state presents to political movements aspiring to enact democratic transformations By democratic transformations, I mean a mode of politics that brings critical scrutiny upon previously unchallenged and rigid forms of domination and that thereby seeks to change, not just the distribution of material goods or the electoral fortunes of a particular party, but the basic structure of social relationships. As a confrontation between the first modern, nation wide social welfare institutions and a movement seeking such democratic transformations, the confrontation between Bismarck and the SPD distils the questions I address: Can democratic political movements use social welfare institutions to achieve lasting change in society? Or will participation in hierarchical state structures inevitably dissipate the transformative aspirations of such movements?”
