Overview

The Master's degree programme Livestock Sciences deals with the fundamentals and interrelationships for the production of high-quality food on a national as well as an international level. This includes questions of nutrition, breeding, production technology, preventive protection against diseases and the quality of the products produced, among other things. The degree programme deals with the following fields:

 

  • Animal husbandry and husbandry biology 
  • Animal nutrition and nutritional physiology
  • Animal breeding and domestic animal genetics

Composition of the study programme

The degree programme is composed of 20 modules:

  • 8 core (compulsory) modules (6 CP each)
  • 8 profile (elective) modules (6 CP each)
  • a written Master's thesis (equivalent to 4 modules).

Half of the course modules are compulsory (core modules), the other half can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered by the department and partly from other departments of JLU Giessen (profile modules).

 

Specialisation is possible by choosing the profile modules. The degree programme is successfully completed when all modules have been passed.

  • Molecular Animal Breeding and Biotechnology
  • Breeding value estimation and breeding planning
  • Animal justice, animal welfare and animal protection in farm animal husbandry
  • Performance and stress physiology
  • Agricultural technology
  • Animal nutrition, product quality and environment
  • Special nutritional physiology

Application

Application: Admission requirements

Commencement of studies

Possible in the winter and in the summer semester. Suggested start of studies is the winter semester.

Admission requirements

Livestock Sciences is a so-called consecutive Master's degree programme. A relevant Bachelor's degree therfore required for admission. The following Bachelor's degrees are currently considered relevant:   

  • Agricultural Biology
  • Agricultural Economics
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Agriculture

The Examination Committee may recognise other degrees as equivalent within the scope of the application and admission procedure after a case-by-case examination.

Application/enrolment

  • The degree programme is not subject to admission restrictions.
  • The application period for the winter semester begins at the beginning of June and for the summer semester at the beginning of December.
  • The end of the application period is determined each year, please check the application portal during the enrolment period.
