Annex 1: Die Gletscherstation Tianshan des CAREERI

Urumqi-Seminar: 27.08. - 02.09.2006

Die Tianshan Glaciological Station was established in 1959. At present, the station consists of a base (2130 m a.s.l.) and a high mountain station (3545 m a.s.l.). It is the only station focusing glaciers as the main research target and with versatile observational parameters of long term sequences in China. Facilities of the station are well equipped including low temperature laboratory, library and meeting hall, etc. Much attention has been paid to research on glaciology, glacial hydrology and meteorology, glacier physics as well as cold region’s hydrology, while great efforts have also been made on the monitoring and PGPI program. The station has become a multidisciplinary base for international cooperation, scientist training and instrument test. Through World Glacier Monitoring Service at Zurich some data obtained at the station are made world wide public, reflecting the international character of the station.
