Study "How parasites cause liver cancer" at JLU Giessen identifies signaling pathways for carcinogenesis

GGL Alumna Anita Windhorst and GGL Member Karuna Irungbam are involved!

Schistosomiasis is the most common parasitic infectious disease worldwide after malaria. The schistosomes live in the blood vessels of their hosts and put down their eggs there. These are trafficked into various organs and cause serious inflammation especially in the liver, spleen and intestine, which can be fatal.

Working groups of the Gastroenterology and the Institute of Parasitology at the Justus Liebig University (Prof. Dr. Elke Roeb, Prof. Dr. Christoph Grevelding) have investigated how the parasite Schistosoma mansoni activates cancer-causing factors in the liver.
