Project M6 (Completed)

Surface patterning and functionalization strategies for targeted bone cell adhesion and response

This project aims at improving the design of implant materials by modifying their surface topography at the micro and nanoscale range in a well-defined fashion. The topographical modifications function as a platform for further linking of molecules, which elicit specific cell adhesion-dependent responses. With such materials it is therefore possible to determine the role of molecule type, density and orientation on the surface in terms of selectivity of cell adhesion and differentiation response. The long term goal is to control, via these surfaces, cell responses which in turn affect bone formation, in both physiological and pathological systems.
