Dealing with passwords

Good IT security depends on secure passwords. Please follow these rules when handling passwords:

  • Use each password only once.
  • Avoid easily guessable passwords such as your birthdate, name, etc.
  • A good password should be at least 12 characters long and include numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and special characters. We understand that such passwords can be difficult to remember. Below, we offer some recommendations on how to make this easier for you.
  • Whenever possible, use two-factor authentication.

For more information on passwords, please visit the pages of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) or the University's IT service center (please note that these pages are available in German language only). Of course, it is not easy to remember countless complicated passwords. We recommend using a password manager to securely store your passwords and using "Windows Hello," which allows you to log in to your PC with a short PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition.
