Setting up a new PC
- Set JLU-SU password
Every computer bought via the IT Service Center is delivered with the administrator account "JLU-SU". When you log in to a new PC for the first time, you will be prompted to set a new password. Please note our guidelines on passwords. - Create a new user
For security reasons, you should never be permanently logged in with an administrator account, but only use it to create a new user account or perform similar administrative tasks. To create a new account, right-click on the Start button and select Computer Management. In the tree view on the left, select System - Local Users and Groups - Users. With a right-click on the right window, a context menu opens where you can select "New User". The user should have the format {Lastname}-{First letter of Firstname} (e.g. Wolf-M for user Michael Wolf). Also choose a secure password here. We recommend deselecting the option "User must change password at next logon" and selecting "Password never expires". However, you should ask your colleague (if you are not using the PC yourself) to change the password immediately. -
Update software
Normally, several commonly used programs are already installed on a new PC. It's recommended to install any available Windows updates and check if browsers (Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge), Adobe Acrobat, 7-Zip, Teamviewer, and Dell Command|Update are up-to-date. If you have problems updating software, we'll be happy to help.
Important notes
Do not use a Microsoft account to log in to your PC. You may be prompted by Windows to use a Microsoft account to log in, but for the time being, we advise against using this option and recommend setting up a local user account instead, as described above.
Microsoft has recently started rolling out an app called Outlook (new). This app must not be used by JLU employees, as it transmits your login credentials to Microsoft servers. Always use only Outlook (classic) or alternative email software like Mozilla Thunderbird. We recommend uninstalling the Outlook (new) app. If you have any questions, we're here to help.
