Composition of the Study Programme

What can I expect from this programme?

The History and Culture study programme is characterised by its wide range of subjects; in total, you can choose from 15 different major subjects and a number of further minor subjects. This results in a wide variety of subject combinations and, consequently, a personalised study programme.

What will I learn?

The content varies considerably depending on the subjects chosen. History courses provide an insight into the circumstances surrounding historical events across all eras; courses in Classical Philology focus on the language and culture of ancient Europe; and the Art Education course focuses on the teaching, analysis and exploration of artistic works.

What skills and interests should I have?

The degree programmes are aimed at students with an interest in languages, culture and the humanities. These include issues relating to communal life and the shaping and description of cultural spheres, the arts practised within those cultures, as well as their historical development and significance.

Regardless of which subject you choose, you should always be prepared to read, interpret and discuss.

How is the programme structured?

You can choose whether you would like to study two or three subjects. This gives you two possible options for structuring your degree:

  • a first major (80 credits) and a second major (70 credits), or
  • a first major (80 credits), a first minor (40 credits) and a second minor (30 credits).

Both options also include a further 30 credits, comprising the dissertation, the work placement and modules in the area of non-subject-specific skills (AfK). The main focus of the degree programme is always on your first major subject; this is where you will obtain your bachelors degree.

As part of your first major subject, you will also write your Bachelors thesis, in which you will demonstrate your ability to produce an academic paper independently. The internship is also part of the first major subject.
