Winfile/Data1

In addition to the Hessen- or JLUBox, the IT service center (HRZ) also offers additional cloud storage: winfile and data1. Both types of network drives can be ordered through JustOS. Unfortunately, it is often not clear which network drive is best suited for a particular application. Through conversations with our users and supported by our own experiences, we would like to give you some recommendations. Further information about the HRZ network drives can also be found here.

Home Drive

In addition to the free JLUBox storage, each employee also has a free home drive on winfile. It has a storage capacity of 50 GB and can be accessed from within the JLU internal network (LAN, WLAN eduroam, VPN). Backups are made hourly between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., and file versions up to 14 days old can also be restored by the user (on Windows only). The path to your home drive is \\winfile.uni-giessen.de\home$[username]. A guide on how to connect a Windows system to the home drive can be found here (in German language only).

winfile

In our opinion, winfile is best suited for storing data that the entire research group (or only parts like the secretariat) needs to access regularly. Any number of users can be defined, the data is backed up every two hours between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., and data from the last two days can be restored by the users. The IT service center stores daily backups for 180 days. Unlike the home drive or the Hessenbox, winfile is not free to use, but it allows for secure storage of larger amounts of data. As of July 2024, winfile costs €2.50 per 10 GB of storage capacity per year.

If you are already using winfile, we recommend that you request an up-to-date overview of your winfile drive and the assigned permissions before applying for new access rights for employees. This helps to stay on top of things and identify any permissions which aren't needed anymore.

data1

Data1 is suitable for storing larger amounts of data (from 2 TB). Unlike winfile, a maximum of five users can be granted access rights. Data1 is backed up every four hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and restoration of data by the user is possible up to 48 hours back. Daily backups are stored for 30 days. As of July 2024, data1 costs €10 per 100 GB of storage capacity per year.

Instructions

Instructions for connecting a Windows PC or Apple Mac to winfile or data1 can be found on the IT service center website.
