Paleontological Collection

The extensive original geognostic–paleontological collection was largely destroyed during World War II. After Giessen University reopened, work began at the Geological–Paleontological Institute to rebuild a display and teaching collection. This collection, which focused on the Giessen landscape, was on display in the Zeughaus (armory) starting in 1961. After closing the paleontology department, the paleontological collection became part of the Institute of Applied Geosciences. The collection was still located in cabinets in the course room of the institute's building at Diezstrasse 15 until 2004. Prof. Wolfram Blind (1929-2017), Giessen's last paleontology professor, took care of the collection as long as he could and always advocated for an exhibition of the artifacts. The Hermann Hoffmann Academy was able to take over the collection. In the future, it will be refurbished and suitably presented. Currently, only a small portion of the exhibits from the systematic collection is on display.
